The COVID-19 pandemic has, and continues to, take a toll onhealthcare workers. While many individuals may have thought that the worst was behind them, the reality is that the pandemic is far from over for caregivers. Facing an unprecedented labor crisis and with continued surges filling up ICU beds, both clinical and non- clinical staff struggle to maintain balance. According to a survey from Mental Health America, this global health crisis led to 93% of healthcare workers experiencing stress and 76% reporting feelings of exhaustion and burnout.

Additionally, healthcare IT (HIT) professionals, responsible for keeping an innumerable amount of interconnected systems, software and equipment performing seamlessly 24/7, were faced with more pressure as they worked long hours to provide patients and caregivers with uninterrupted support. While telehealth and other digital tools can assist patients when they can’t physically be
in the care setting, its rapid implementation did not occur without challenges. Post-pandemic, organizational leaders will need to revamp how they support caregivers and HIT employees to ensure they have the tools they need to best care for the patient population, reduce the effects of burnout and work vibrantly.
